E-F1 LR-1A Pogo Prototype Video

Postby RSmith » Fri Feb 26, 2010 12:25 am

Hey Folks,
Today I had the pleasure of having a check-out on the new LR-1A Pogo prototype to be offered by Horizon Hobby soon. I'm here at the Q40 Classic pylon race in Phoenix Arizona. During the sport flyers' break between pylon test laps, Scott MacAfee offered me a check-out flight.

I have to say that I was very impressed with the way it flew. It is smooth and QUICK. It is extremely good looking in the air and it handles like a pattern airplane (solid). The vertical performance is remarkable. I threw in a few clicks of right rudder just to hold the nose up a bit in the pylon turns and it flew great. The takeoff was achieved with a nice slow advance of the throttle stick. You don't want to bang the throttle ahead because it has a lot of torque due to the 8x8 prop and electric motor. A healthy dose of right rudder is recommended on take off. Pete says that Horizon may have the first ones available in April or so. Everyone is wondering "when can I get one ?".

Here is a video clip of Scott doing a demo flight today. Sorry for the low grade video. I just used my point and shoot Kodak on video mode. Also, there's a four-stroke sport model flying at the same time as Scott so you hear a lot of that plane rather than just the E-F1. Scott took off before I could film the takeoff. Then the power was depleted on the model's batteries before he could make a nice smooth landing. (Sorry Scott for showing the landing part...) Anyway, Scott demonstrates how the model can be flown as a sport airplane doing a number of nice slow rolls and stall turns. Some nice low passes show its speed and stability.

Video of the flight can be found here:

Has the rules set for this potential event been finalised? If so where can I find a copy?

Thanks,

Hmm,

I guess the answer to my questions are "I do not know" and "I do not know"

Ed,
The proposed rules are posted here. http://www.nmpra.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=2379 As far as I have read on RCGroups http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1178471&page=36 post # 528 by Dan Kane states that as of April 2, 2010, the rules have not been finalize.

Hope that helps some :D

Hi Scott,

Thanks for the reply,

I read the proposed rules a while ago. Soome of them realy needed editing or clarifying. Hence my question.

some of the things I see as I skip through it:

(1) do not "recommend balance taps" on the battery. It should be required or not.

(2) I may get better performance with 4 single cells rather than one 4 cell pack (Better cooling) "no more than two motor packs"

I just got my new LR-1a, and I want to know what the suggestion is for a battery. Is there a "C" limit? The rules state 4s and a weight. Also, is there a differnce between to the 2 motors mentioned in the rules? They both look the same, I am wondering if one has a prolonged life compared to the other.

Thanks

I think we ought to abandon the turnigy motors as they seem to burn out too quickly.
The Power 25 eflite is not available yet so Arch Adamsin posted about some axi's and some other motors that would fit the bill. Can anyone suggest a model of one of these other motors we can try???

here is the blip about additional motors for this class.

At this time, Archie
Adamisin has proposed three more
motor brands to the rules committee.
AXI, Rimfire, and Mega have similar
motors that Archie feels would be
applicable to this event. So we’ll see
where this goes, and there may be
more options in motors soon.
